Abstract

Symbolic interactionism is a social process that enables individuals to understand themselves and others through the use of symbols in communication. The objectives of this study are: (1) to describe the forms of symbolic interaction in the domains of mind, self, and society, and (2) to explain the impacts of symbolic interaction in the novel Negeri Lintasan Petir by Gerson Poyk. This research adopts a literary sociology approach and employs the symbolic interactionism theory proposed by George Herbert Mead (1938). The study uses a qualitative research method. The data source is the novel Negeri Lintasan Petir by Gerson Poyk, with data in the form of narrative units and dialogues. The data were collected through library research techniques. The findings of the study reveal that (1) symbolic interaction appears in the domain of mind through gestures and verbal symbols, in self through the dynamics between I and Me, and in society through sympathy, conflict, and the integration of I and Me within social contexts. (2) The impacts of symbolic interaction are observed in the mind domain as communicative effectiveness, symbolic coordination, and environmental control; in the self domain as reflection, adjustment, and self-control; and in the society domain as value formation, changes in interaction patterns, and the creation of collective meaning. The analysis indicates that the domains of mind, self, and society are interrelated. Mind serves as the basis for symbolic meaning, self responds to those symbols through social awareness, and society emerges as the accumulated result of ongoing symbolic interactions.
