Abstract
This study aims to determine the Implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) lesson method in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning at SMA Negeri 4 Malang. The background of this research is based on the low participation and understanding of students in learning Islamic Religious Education (PAI) which still uses conventional learning methods. This research uses a qualitative approach with the type of case study research and research informants consisting of PAI teachers of SMAN 4 Malang and students of SMAN 4 Malang. Data collection techniques were conducted through observation, interview, and documentation.The results showed that the application of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) method in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) subjects was carried out with the planning stage (preparation of lesson plans and selection of hadith material and implementation (delivery of case studies, group discussions, presentations, and reflections). This method has succeeded in increasing active involvement, critical thinking skills, as well as students' understanding of the hadith material. The teacher acts as a facilitator who guides the process of discussion and exploration of the material by students. The supporting factors for the successful implementation of Problem Based Learning (PBL) include the independent curriculum, school facilities, and the characteristics of open and active learners. Meanwhile, the challenges faced include limited learning time and inequality of contributions between group members. In conclusion, the Problem Based Learning (PBL) method is effectively applied in learning Islamic Religious Education (PAI) because it is able to make students more active, critical, and understand religious values contextually.
