Abstract
This study aims to describe the transformation of digital citizenship through digital ethics education in addressing the era of disinformation at SMP Muhammadiyah 8 Kota Batu. The rapid development of digital technology has significantly influenced patterns of social interaction, including in the field of education, requiring students to become smart, critical, and responsible digital citizens. A major challenge arising from this development is the widespread disinformation that can affect the behavior and character of digital citizens, particularly among younger generations. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and document studies, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The research informants included the principal, civic education and ICT teachers, as well as 8th and 9th grade students.
The findings indicate that the transformation of digital citizenship at SMP Muhammadiyah 8 Kota Batu is implemented through the integration of digital ethics education into the curriculum, extracurricular activities such as coding and journalism, and the use of digital platforms for learning and student project publication. Digital ethics education plays a crucial role in fostering students’ critical awareness, instilling ethical behavior in digital spaces, and reducing their vulnerability to disinformation. Supporting factors of this transformation include school policy support, teacher readiness, and adequate technological facilities, while inhibiting factors involve limited digital literacy among some students and the challenge of online supervision. The implications of this research highlight the importance of strengthening digital ethics education as a strategy to develop digital citizens who are ethical, adaptive, and capable of navigating the flow of information in the disinformation era.
