Abstract
According to the 2023 Education Report, 61.53% of students in elementary schools or equivalent institutions demonstrated literacy competencies above the minimum standard—a rise of 8.11% from 2021. In first grade, the transition period from kindergarten to primary school requires time for students to adapt, as seen at SD Negeri Tegalgondo, where many first-grade students still struggle with beginning reading. This research aims to (1) identify the beginning reading ability of first-grade students at SD Negeri Tegalgondo, and (2) determine the factors contributing to students’ lack of fluency in beginning reading.
This study used a qualitative approach, as the data collected were descriptive in nature. Descriptive data were obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation. The data sources selected were first-grade students at SD Negeri Tegalgondo, Malang Regency, during the 2024/2025 academic year.
The results of the study show that (1) students were unable to read digraph letters, had difficulty reading words, struggled with spelling, and did not yet recognize punctuation marks; and (2) factors affecting students' fluency in beginning reading included internal factors—such as lack of motivation to learn—and external factors—such as an unsupportive home environment.
