Abstract
Based on the results of interviews with SMPN 1 Batu teachers, in reality students' mathematical communication skills are still low. As a solution to overcome the low ability of mathematical communication by applying PBL models and the help of powtoon audio-visual media. This study aims to determine whether there are significant differences in mathematical communication skills between students who apply the PBL learning model using powtoon media and students who apply conventional models. The method used was quasi-experiment with a pretest-posttest control group design. The research was conducted at SMPN 01 Batu with the subject of class VII-H students as the control class and grade VII-I students as the experimental class. The research instruments used consist of test sheets, observation sheets, and interview guidelines. Data analysis with the help of SPSS 18 for windows consists of normality test, homogeneity test, and hypothesis test. The results of this study showed that on average post-test results there was a significant difference, where the control class obtained an average of 52.73 while the experimental class obtained an average of 61.84. The results of the post-test mathematical communication ability hypothesis test obtained a significance value of 0.002<0.05 then H_0 rejected. So it can be concluded that there are significant differences in mathematical communication skills between students who apply PBL learning and powtoon media with students who apply conventional learning models.
