Abstract

Based on the analysis of fourth-grade students at SD Bumiayu 1 Malang, it was found that the problem of low reading comprehension skills in Indonesian language learning was caused by learning media that was still centered on textbooks and teaching methods that lacked variety. This study aimed to develop learning media in the form of Big-Books based on the SQ3R model to help students understand reading texts more easily. The Big-Book media, equipped with large-sized text and images, makes it easier for students to read together with the teacher and understand the content of the text more clearly. The SQ3R model (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review) was chosen because its five stages can help students focus more, be more active, and easily understand the content of the text.
This study is a research and development (R&D) study using the ADDIE model, which includes the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data collection techniques were conducted through observation, interviews, documentation, and expert validation questionnaires for subject matter experts, media experts, and student responses. Research instruments were systematically designed to ensure the validity of the data obtained and to support each stage of development. The developed product is a large-sized Big-Book with attractive illustrations, informative reading text, and learning activity guidelines aligned with the SQ3R steps.
The research results on the Big-Book media were highly appealing in the expert validation of subject matter and media, achieving a 95% approval rate. Users also demonstrated very positive evaluations, with an average approval rate of 92%. The Big-Book media successfully improved reading comprehension skills, as evidenced by evaluation results averaging 93.15%. The development process of this media involved stages of subject matter validation and media validation, which were previously used in instruction. The Big-Book media based on the SQ3R model was then tested through the implementation stage in Grade IV of Bumiayu 1 Elementary School in Malang. Based on the results, it was found to be able to attract learning interest and make it easy to understand the content of the reading material. Thus, the use of Big-Book media is appropriate for application in Indonesian language learning of main ideas and supporting ideas at the elementary school level.
