Abstract
This study aims to examine the forms of collective memory and their impact on the characters in Seno Gumira Ajidarma's novel Kalatidha. The main focus of this study is how the events of 1965 are remembered, inherited, and psychologically influence the lives of the characters in the novel's narrative. The problem formulation in this study includes the forms of collective memory experienced by the characters and the psychological and social impact of these memories on how the characters view themselves, their environment, and history.
This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. This study is based on Maurice Halbwachs' theory of collective memory and is strengthened by supporting concepts such as flashbulb memory, generational memory, and traditional memory. Data are obtained from narrative excerpts in the novel that show the process of characters remembering past events, both personal and social, and are analyzed based on the theoretical framework.
The research findings show that Kalatidha represents three main forms of collective memory: flashbulb memory, captured through powerful and detailed traumatic experiences; generational memory, passed down through family or community narratives; and traditional memory, expressed in oral stories and the repetition of memories in the characters' daily lives. The impact of these memories is evident in psychological trauma, the search for identity, and memory distortions resulting from historical repression and social stigma. Thus, Kalatidha is not only a literary work, but also a collective memory space that speaks to the experiences of marginalized groups in post-1965 Indonesian history
