Lulu Dwi Kalbuani THE EFFECT OF THE APPLICATION OF THE PROBLEM
BASED LEARNING (PBL) MODEL ON THE CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS
OF STUDENTS IN CLASS IV OF SDN PENDEM 1 BATU CITY. Thesis,

This research was motivated by an initial observation on November 5, 2024 at SDN
Pendem 1 Kota Batu which showed that although the Problem-Based Learning
Model (PBL) has been implemented, the use of the lecture method still dominates
due to limited time, teacher and student readiness, and inadequate classroom
conditions. This results in a lack of enthusiasm for learning and monotonous
learning among grade IV students. Therefore, this study analyzes the influence of
the application of the PBL model on the critical thinking skills of grade IV students
of SDN Pendem 1 Kota Batu, considering the importance of critical thinking skills
in the current era.
This study uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, involving
two classes, namely the experimental class and the control class. Research
instruments in the form of pretest and posttest were given to measure students'
critical thinking skills before and after treatment. Data is collected through relevant
data collection techniques and analyzed using appropriate statistical data analysis
techniques.
The results showed that there was no significant effect of the application of the PBL
model on the improvement of critical thinking skills of students in the experimental
class, as evidenced by the Wilcoxon test which showed a significance value of
1,000 (> 0.05). On the other hand, the control class that was not given PBL
treatment showed a significant increase with a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05).
These findings indicate that the effectiveness of PBL implementation is greatly
influenced by implementation factors, teacher readiness, and characteristics of
students at the elementary school level.
Although PBL theoretically supports the development of critical thinking, its
practice requires a mature implementation strategy for optimal results.
