Abstract

Background: As the outermost organ of the human body, the skin plays a vital role
in maintaining moisture and protecting the body from environmental influences.
Disturbances in the skin's homeostatic balance, particularly in water and lipid
levels, can lead to dry skin conditions. One approach to maintaining skin moisture
is the use of topical preparations such as moisturizing gels. Eco enzyme, a product
of fermenting organic waste with sugar and water, has potential as a natural,
environmentally friendly active ingredient in moisturizing gel formulations.
However, to date, there have been few studies examining the effectiveness of eco
enzyme as an active ingredient in cosmetic formulations.
Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of eco enzyme concentrations
of 6.25%, 12.5%, and 25% on the physicochemical characteristics and effectiveness
in increasing skin moisture in moisturizing gel preparations.
Methode: This research method uses an experimental approach with a post-test
only control group design to test the effect of various concentrations of eco enzyme
(6.25%, 12.5%, and 25%) in moisturizer gel preparations on physicochemical
characteristics (organoleptic, homogeneity, adhesion, viscosity, spreadability, and
pH) and skin moisture levels. The gel production process was carried out based on
a standardized formulation using carbopol 940 as the base, and each formulation
was tested at the Pharmaceutical Formulation Technology Laboratory of
Muhammadiyah University of Malang. Data collection was conducted through
laboratory testing and in vivo testing using a skin analyzer, followed by statistical
analysis using a One-Way ANOVA test with a significance level of 95% (α = 0.05)
to determine differences between treatment groups.
Results and Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that increasing the
concentration of eco enzyme in the gel formulation significantly affects pH,
viscosity, and adhesion, while improving spreadability and skin moisture. The
formulation with a 25% eco enzyme concentration (F3) provides the highest
moisture level, approaching the positive control (Aloe vera 98%), despite showing
lower viscosity and adhesion. Eco enzyme has potential as a natural active
ingredient in gel moisturizer formulations, particularly at a 25% concentration, with
the ability to significantly enhance skin moisture without compromising
formulation homogeneity and stability. These findings open opportunities for the
utilization of eco enzyme as an environmentally friendly alternative in the
cosmetics industry
