Abstract
Basic education is an important foundation in building knowledge,
skills, character, and cognitive abilities of learners. One of the important aspects that elementary school students must master is language skills, including initial reading. Difficulty in beginning reading is often found in 1st grade elementary school students, so it is necessary to have an interesting, interactive learning media, and facilitate active student involvement. This research aims to develop audio-based Big Book learning media to improve the initial reading ability of students in grade 1 of elementary school Pendem 01 Batu City
This research uses the Research and Development (R&D)method with the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) development model. The subjects of this research trial are 32 students of class 1C elementary school Pendem 01 Batu City. Data collection techniques include observation, interview, survey, and documentation. The instruments used are in the form of observation sheets, interview guidelines, validation questionnaires, teacher and student response questionnaires, and
documentation.
The research results show that the audio-based Big Book media that was developed received validation from material experts with an eligibility score of 90.6% and validation from media experts of 87.5%, so it is included in a very decent category. The implementation of media in the classroom shows that students are more enthusiastic, active, and improve in their initial reading skills. The response of teachers and students to this media is also very positive. Thus, audio-based Big Book media is suitable to be implemented as a beginner reading learning media for 1st grade elementary school students.
