Abstract

This study aims to explore the motivation of hearing individuals ("teman dengar") in participating in sign language learning classes organized by the Sunyi Bermakna (SUKMA) Community in Kutai Timur Regency. “Teman dengar” refers to individuals without hearing impairments who voluntarily learn sign language to communicate with the Deaf community. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques including participant observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that the motivation of “teman dengar” is intrinsically driven, characterized by internal impulses such as empathy, curiosity, and a sense of moral responsibility toward the Deaf. Over time, this motivation evolves into broader social-transformational motivation, such as the desire to build inclusive communities or empower Deaf individuals. The study is analyzed using McClelland’s Theory of Needs, which includes the need for achievement, affiliation, and power. The results indicate that all three needs manifest in various forms and strengthen the participation of “teman dengar” in sign language learning. This research contributes to the development of social inclusion strategies through a motivation-based approach.
