Abstract
Background : Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a progressive condition that causes gradual decline in kidney function and requires long-term treatment. One such treatment is hemodialysis. The hemodialysis procedure not only affects the patient’s physical condition but also causes psychological distress such as anxiety. Anxiety in CKD patients can be triggered by various factors, one of which is health literacy levels. Health literacy plays a crucial role in helping patients understand their condition, make informed decisions, and manage their emotions.
Research Methods : This study employed a cross-sectional design using an analytical correlation method. The study population consisted of CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis at the General Hospital of Muhammadiyah University in Malang. This study used quota sampling with the Health Literacy Scale (HLS) questionnaire to measure patients' health literacy and the State and Trait Anxiety Index (STAI) to measure patients' anxiety levels. Data analysis used frequency distribution for univariate data testing, while bivariate data testing used Spearman's correlation test to examine the relationship between variables.
Result : The study results showed that the majority of CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis had inadequate health literacy, totaling 74 patients out of 134 respondents. Meanwhile, 106 patients out of 134 patients had moderate anxiety levels. The Spearman correlation test results showed a negative relationship between health literacy and anxiety levels, proven to be significant at 0.000 and a value (r) of -0.686 with a strong relationship strength.
Conclusion : There is a strong relationship between health literacy and anxiety levels in patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis.
