Abstract

The research entitled "Representation Cancel Culture in Drama Genre Film (Roland Barthes' Semiotic Analysis on the Moral Film by Wregas Bhanuteja)" is an Indonesian film that aired in 2023 and was directed by Wregas Bhanuteja. The purpose of the research is to find out the meaning behind the symbols/signs in the film "Budi Pekerti" which is related to Cancel culture. A symbol is a sign that is not just what is seen directly, but has a broader meaning. Film is a mass communication medium that can shape and influence individuals or audiences by conveying messages in it. The film Budi Pekerti as a depiction of social reality tells the social and psychological impact of this phenomenon Cancel culture against the main character, Mrs. Prani, a BK teacher who became a victim due to a viral video. Phenomenon Cancel culture is a social issue that often arises in society, especially in the digital era, which is still limited in understanding in Indonesian society.
This study uses an interpretive qualitative approach with Roland Barthes semiotics which consists of three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. The results of this study found that the Cancel culture through visual and narrative symbols that reflect social exclusion, psychological pressure, as well as individual reputation. Cancel culture visualized through scenes that show the event of rejection or judgment because it is considered deviant from the prevailing social norms in society.
