Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of Good Islamic Boarding School Governance (GIG) based on family culture as an effort to achieve the sustainability of Islamic boarding schools, using a case study at Pondok Pesantren Nurul Ulum in Malang City. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving the boarding school’s caregivers, management, students, and parents. The results indicate that the principles of Good Corporate Governance (GCG)—namely transparency, accountability, responsibility, independence, and fairness—have been adapted into the school’s governance through a familial approach. Family culture strongly influences decision-making, role allocation, and the continuity of religious values in the school’s management. The sustainability of the boarding school is reflected in three key aspects: family religiosity, family reputation, and family image. Although governance remains largely centered on the founding family, the strategic integration of family values supports the institution’s stability and long-term continuity. This study contributes theoretically by extending the application of GCG in faith-based educational institutions and provides practical guidance for sustainable and professional Islamic boarding school governance
