Abstract

The development of education in the 21st century presents new challenges for both teachers and students to adapt to increasingly complex global demands. One of the main focuses of 21st-century education is the development of 4C skills: Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, and Creativity. These skills are essential not only for preparing students to face the dynamic world of work but also for addressing social, economic, and technological issues. This study aims to analyze the implementation of 4C skills in the learning process and how they contribute to improving the quality of education. In the context of 21st-century learning, effective instruction must actively engage students in meaningful learning experiences that go beyond content mastery to also develop critical thinking, effective communication, teamwork, and creative problem- solving.
This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study conducted at SMA Islam Kepanjen, involving Bahasa Indonesia teachers and students. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation to gain an in- depth understanding of the implementation of the Problem Based Learning model in teaching negotiation texts. The data were analyzed qualitatively through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The main focus of this study is to identify how this learning strategy supports the development of 21st- century skills such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity.
The results show that the integration of 4C skills in the classroom enhances student engagement and encourages creative problem-solving. Student collaboration also improved, strengthening communication and teamwork skills. With the use of educational technology, the learning process can be tailored to individual student needs while increasing instructional effectiveness. The implementation of 4C skills requires a significant shift in teaching methodology, with teachers acting more as facilitators who guide students in self-directed learning. Therefore, this study also identifies challenges and opportunities in applying 4C-based learning and provides recommendations for teacher competency development and optimal use of technology. It is expected that the consistent implementation of 4C skills will produce students who are not only knowledgeable but also ready to face future challenges. This research aims to contribute to the development of more innovative and relevant learning models, enabling 21st-century education to align with the demands of an ever-evolving era.
