Abstract
This study aims to reveal the perspectives of Islamic Education (PAI) teachers on religious extremism from an Islamic viewpoint and its implications for the transformation of Islamic Education learning at SMKN 2 Malang. The research originates from concerns about the rise of intolerant and radical opinions among
Indonesian society, as well as the increasing number of religion-based extremism cases in Indonesia. This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive
method, using observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation.
The findings show that PAI teachers at SMKN 2 Malang view religious
extremism as a form of blind fanaticism and intolerance, rooted in textual religious
understanding, the influence of social media, and shallow mastery of religious
knowledge. To counter extremism, the PAI teachers at SMKN 2 Malang apply a moderate teaching approach by integrating the values of tolerance into the curriculum, facilitating religious discussions, and utilizing available learning media. Additionally, the school supports these efforts through extracurricular programs, religious sermons (tausiyah), and religious activities as a form of character education reinforcement. These findings highlight the crucial role of PAI teachers in safeguarding students from extreme ideologies and transforming learning into a more inclusive and moderate direction.
