Abstract

Background: ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) is a disease characterized by a total blockage in the coronary arteries caused by atherosclerotic plaque. This causes an imbalance in the ability of the heart muscle to supply maximum oxygen. In this Final Scientific Paper, the author addresses the case of a patient diagnosed with STEMI who presented with shortness of breath. An intervention that can help reduce the patient's shortness of breath is the administration of a combination of the semi-Fowler's position and a nasal cannula. This study aims to determine the results of administration a combination of the semi fowler's position and oxygen therapy using a nasal cannula.
Method: The research method used in this Final Scientific Paper is a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. The researcher collected data through direct observation, interviews, and documentation (patient's medical records). The author followed the scientific method according to nursing process principles, which include: assessment, data analysis, nursing intervention, implementation, and evaluation, referring to SDKI, SLKI, and SIKI.
Results: After the nursing intervention of administration the combination of semi fowler's position and oxygen via nasal cannula, the results showed an improvement in the oxygenation of the patient with an ineffective breathing pattern, where complaints of shortness of breath (dyspnea) decreased, the respiratory rate (RR) was within the normal range at 19 x/minute, and oxygen saturation (SpO₂) was 99%.
Discussion: The main nursing problem in patients with ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) is an ineffective breathing pattern, which was addressed with an airway management intervention by placing the patient in the semi fowler's position and administering oxygen therapy using a nasal cannula to improve the patient's breathing pattern.
