Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of the Iqro’ method in introducing hijaiyah letters to early childhood at the “Les Ngaji Malang” institution and to identify the challenges faced by the instructors. Mastery of hijaiyah letters is an essential foundation for the ability to read the Qur’an, and the Iqro’ method is a widely used approach. However, in the context of private tutoring, its implementation shows significant variation. This study employs a qualitative approach with a case study research design. Data collection was conducted through non-participant observation, semi-structured interviews with instructors, and documentation. Data analysis followed Robert K. Yin’s approach, focusing on pattern matching and explanation building.
The findings reveal that the implementation of the Iqro’ method is carried out in three stages: an initial approach focusing on building rapport, a basic strategy centered on repetition using the guidebook, and significant variation in methods among instructors. Three categories of instructors were identified: (1) highly varied, who proactively use visual, auditory, game-based, and kinesthetic activities to maintain enthusiasm and facilitate understanding; (2) moderately varied, who apply variation reactively when children start to get bored; and (3) non-varied, who strictly adhere to the Iqro’ book due to strong belief in the effectiveness of the standard method. These differences are driven by teaching autonomy, personal beliefs, and the instructors’ creative skills. The main challenges faced include maintaining children’s focus and concentration, overcoming boredom, and addressing diverse learning paces.
In conclusion, although the Iqro’ method provides a systematic foundational framework, its effectiveness in the private tutoring context greatly depends on the instructors’ creativity and ability to adapt their approach to the characteristics of early childhood learners. Method variation has proven to enhance enthusiasm, understanding, and foster a love for the Qur’an among children.
