Abstract
Background: Motor coordination skills are an important aspect of child development, particularly for daily activities involving fine and gross motor movements. Children with intellectual disabilities and Down syndrome often have limitations in motor coordination due to neurological and sensory developmental disorders.
Objective: This study aims to compare the motor coordination abilities of students with intellectual disabilities and students with Down syndrome at the Sidoarjo District Disability Services Unit (UPTD).
Methods: This study employed a descriptive, quantitative, cross-sectional, observational design. The sample consisted of 18 students, including nine students with intellectual disabilities and nine students with Down syndrome. The students were selected using purposive sampling. Motor coordination abilities were measured using the Motor Fitness Test instrument, which assesses eye-hand coordination, through a ball-throwing and catching game.
Results: The normality test results indicated that the data were normally distributed; therefore, an independent t-test was conducted to determine the differences between the two groups. The results of the analysis showed significant differences (p < 0.05) in coordination ability between the two groups. Students with intellectual disabilities demonstrated relatively better coordination compared to students with Down syndrome.
Conclusion: The type of disability affects motor coordination ability; therefore, physical therapy intervention approaches must be tailored to the specific needs of each group.
