Abstract
Song lyrics are used to reflect various aspects of human life experience and act as the main component to reflect the mood of the listener. “Apa Mungkin” is the first single from Bernadya. The lyrics of this song provide a view of the phenomenon around us that tells about a woman who blames herself after finishing a relationship with a man. This research aims to interpret self-blaming.
This research uses a qualitative method with the Roland Barthes semiotic analysis method that analyzes denotative, connotative signs, and the peak of myth analysis in song verses. The results of this study show the meaning of self-blaming in terms of psychology that the nature of women who are meek, easy to give in, and feel guilty is not a natural trait, but the result of social construction formed since childhood through a social learning process, where girls learn to imitate behaviors that are considered appropriate by society. This creates a gender schema that emphasizes that avoiding conflict and being submissive is the way to be socially accepted.
In Bernadya's song, this is illustrated through the female character who is in a subordinate position and feels guilty over a breakup she does not understand, reflecting the pressure of Indonesia's collectivistic culture that demands women maintain harmonious relationships. Representations of women in the media also reinforce the stereotype of the patient and sacrificial ideal, while the patriarchal system places men in power and limits women's role in the public sphere, making guilt a tool of social control over them.
