Abstract
This study discusses the influence of interpersonal communication between coaches and athletes on athletes' achievement motivation in the Taekwondo Student Activity Unit (UKM) of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that has become an international sport and is popular in Indonesia, including among UMM students. In the context of athlete development, interpersonal communication plays a central role in shaping the mentality and fighting spirit of athletes. This study uses a quantitative approach with a descriptive correlational method. The study population was all 113 active athletes of the UMM Taekwondo UKM, with a sample of 88 respondents selected using a simple random sampling technique. The research instrument was a questionnaire compiled based on indicators of interpersonal communication variables according to DeVito, namely openness, empathy, supportive attitude, positive attitude, and equality, as well as indicators of achievement motivation such as discipline and consistency of training. Data analysis techniques used included validity and reliability tests, product moment correlation, coefficient of determination, and simple linear regression tests. The results showed that there was a significant influence between coaches' interpersonal communication and athletes' achievement motivation. Effective, empathetic, and equal communication between coaches and athletes has been shown to improve motivation, discipline, and training performance. This research has important implications for developing athlete training and development strategies on campus, particularly in building a supportive and achievement-oriented sports ecosystem.
