Abstract
This study aims to analyze the audience's reception of moral messages in the film Jakarta Vs Everybody, which tells the struggle of Dom, an overseas youth who aspires to be an actor, but is trapped in the world of drugs and crime. Using Stuart Hall's reception theory, this study classifies the audience's meaning into three positions: dominant-hegemonic, negotiation, and opposition.
Through a qualitative approach and in-depth interviews with five informants from various backgrounds, it was found that audiences had diverse responses. In the dominant position, Dom's actions are considered natural as a form of adaptation. In the negotiation position, understanding of Dom's situation is accompanied by criticism and hope for a better choice. Meanwhile, in the opposition position, Dom's choice is rejected because it is considered contrary to moral principles.
In conclusion, this movie raises various interpretations from the audience regarding the moral messages it contains. The movie not only conveys the harsh reality of urban life, but also opens a space for discussion about life choices, moral values, and the importance of social support in facing the pressures of life.
