Abstract
Aldino Agung Salman Syah Putra, 201810040311386, Analysis of Communication Apprehension During Job Interviews (Qualitative Descriptive Study on Communication Science Fresh Graduates of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang with a Public Relations Concentration) Communication Science Study Program, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang.
Many fresh graduates remain unemployed despite having high education, including Communication Science graduates from Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), even those with a Public Relations concentration. One of the reasons is communication apprehension during job interviews, which prevents them from showcasing their abilities optimally. Yet, soft skills such as effective communication, self-confidence, and the ability to make decisions in all conditions and situations are crucial for competing in the professional world.
This research uses a constructivist paradigm and a qualitative approach, with the research location in Malang. The focus is to identify and understand the types of communication apprehension experienced by Communication Science fresh graduates from UMM with a Public Relations concentration when facing job interviews. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana model, with data validity tested by member checks.
The results show various types of communication apprehension, such as traitlike, situational, context-based, and audience-based. This apprehension manifests as nervousness, avoidance, speech disturbances, and even overcommunication, which affects how they answer questions and behave in front of interviewers. The main triggering factors are interpersonal interaction (Dyad), the interviewer's attitude, and the interview situation which creates psychological pressure. However, this communication apprehension can be managed through practice, experience, and appropriate adaptation strategies.
