Abstract

This study aims to understand how the board members of the Difabel Motorcycle Indonesia (DMI) Community in Malang City interpret the use of dark humor in disability-related issues presented by comedian Anggi Wahyuda through the SOMASI content on Deddy Corbuzier's YouTube channel. Using a qualitative approach and Stuart Hall’s reception analysis method, the research identifies three audience positions: dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional in responding to the stand-up comedy material. Data collection techniques include in-depth interviews and documentation with five board members of the DMI community in Malang City. The findings show that interpretations of dark humor are heavily influenced by personal experiences, sensitivity to disability issues, and social context. Some respondents rejected the use of humor that mocked assistive devices, the term “cacat” (cripple), and disabled body gestures in a comedic context, while others were more tolerant if such jokes were made by fellow persons with disabilities. This study highlights the importance of sensitivity in using humor, especially in representing vulnerable groups, and demonstrates that persons with disabilities are not passive recipients of media narratives, but actively negotiate their identity and dignity through critical interpretations of humorous content.
