Abstract

This study aims to explore how patriarchal and moral discourses surrounding women are constructed through religious symbols in the film Tuhan, Izinkan Aku Berdosa (God, Let Me Sin), employing a radical feminist approach. The film is interpreted as a medium of ideological messaging that utilizes religious symbols to regulate women's bodies and social roles. Visual elements such as the niqab, prayer room (musholla), Islamic attire, and religious forums are not merely ornamental, but part of a power mechanism that disciplines and frames female identity.
This research adopts a qualitative interpretative method, with Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory used to interpret the denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings of symbolic representations in the film. The analysis focuses on how women's bodies are positioned, controlled, and ultimately reclaim meaning through symbolic resistance.
The findings reveal that religious symbols operate ideologically to construct a narrative of obedience imposed on women. The main character, Kiran, becomes the site of conflict between symbolic control and self-awareness. The film illustrates that the female body is not merely an object of morality, but also holds potential as a subject capable of deconstructing and renegotiating symbolic meanings.
