Abstract
Children with disabilities in Lombok Island still face various challenges, particularly related to their physical condition, therefore, they require rehabilitation services to support the improvement of their development. This condition encouraged Apip Sutardi and his wife, Mindie Melanie Schreurs, to establish the LombokCare Foundation to provide rehabilitation services for persons with disabilities. This study aims to examine how family-based social rehabilitation for children with cerebral palsy is implemented at the Therapy Center of the LombokCare Foundation. Cerebral palsy is a neurological disorder caused by damage to the brain or spinal cord, resulting in motor limitations, thus requiring special therapies such as physiotherapy to support the development of independence and overall child development. Family support and active involvement, especially from parents, are essential. Family participation is the foundation’s primary focus, as parental involvement has been proven to enhance the effectiveness of therapeutic outcomes for children. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques including semi-structured and unstructured interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The findings show that families play an active role throughout the rehabilitation process, from introduction to the foundation environment to direct assistance during therapy sessions. The foundation also provides education and guidance to families on how to continue therapy at home to ensure consistency in the rehabilitation process. Through this involvement, children demonstrated positive progress in their ability to be independent—an outcome of collaboration between physiotherapists and families. Thus, family-based social rehabilitation is effective in gradually and sustainably enhancing the independence of children with cerebral palsy.
