Abstract
Human life is inseparable from language activities, as language plays a vital role in communication. Not only is the national language, Bahasa Indonesia, important, but English, as an internationally recognized global language, is also essential to master, as it can offer advantages across various aspects of life. With the rapid advancement of technology, these developments can be utilized to enhance students' language proficiency, particularly in speaking English, by using media such as films as learning tools. To achieve this, motivation or a strong drive to learn is certainly required.
This research aims to gain an in-depth understanding of students’ motivation, including their personal experiences, perceptions, and reasons behind using English-language films as a medium for learning to speak English. This research uses a qualitative research method with a descriptive-narrative research type, incorporating the Uses and Gratifications Theory as well as Albert Bandura’s Social Learning Theory. This research involves five participants who are students from the Communication Science Department at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang, class of 2021. Data were collected through interviews.
The results indicate that students possess both internal and external motivations that drive them to choose films as a medium for learning to speak English. Students actively choose English-language films as a learning medium to fulfill their cognitive, affective, and social needs. Films provide real-life contexts that allow students to observe and imitate characters, which in turn enhances their comprehension, skill, and self-confidence in learning to speak English. This research is expected to offer an alternative learning method that is both enjoyable and effective, particularly in improving students’ speaking skills, which are often considered the most challenging aspect of learning the English language.
