Abstract

The phenomena of globalization and the rapid development of digital technology have created a condition of hyperreality, in which the boundaries between reality and simulation become increasingly blurred. This study aims to understand how hyperreality is formed through the consumption of official merchandise within the fan community, specifically the Zerose community in Malang City, which consists of fans of the South Korean boy group Zerobaseone. This research employs a qualitative approach with a phenomenological research type. The subject selection technique uses purposive sampling, with criteria including active Zerose members, university students in Malang, individuals with a strong interest in Zerobaseone, and active users of social media. Data collection techniques include observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis is conducted using Creswell’s phenomenological method, with data validity ensured through source and method triangulation. The results reveal that official merchandise is not only perceived as collectible items but has evolved into symbols of identity, social status, and emotional closeness to idols. This process is reinforced through social media platforms like Instagram, which serve as visual representation spaces and digital interaction forums among fans. Based on Jean Baudrillard’s theory of simulacra, the consumption of merchandise has created a new reality that outweighs objective reality itself. This study highlights that in the digital era, fan experiences have transformed beyond engagement with art into the consumption of imagery and symbols that construct hyperreality.
