Abstract
Background: Hypertension is when the pressure in the blood vessels is too high (140/90 mmHg or higher). Hypertension is a disease risk that has a great chance of having a stroke and can even cause death worldwide. Objective: To identify emotional responses and explore how families adapt to the diagnosis of hypertension. Methods: The design used is qualitative, which is to obtain and understand in depth to find out the emotional response and how families adapt to the diagnosis of hypertension. Data collection techniques used “semi-stuctured interviews” which have been tested on similar individuals. Data analysis used “Thematic Analysis” with a deduction analysis approach. To maintain the level of (trustworthiness), triangulation and audit trail methods were used: literature and outside reviewers on verbatim data. Results: This study resulted in 3 (main themes), namely: promotion of treatment support, development of emotional coping strategies, management of positive emotions which were organized into 5 sub themes consisting of 10 categories, and 12 codes. Promotion of treatment support includes increasing cohesiveness in supporting recovery, commitment to continued treatment completion support, on the development of emotional coping strategies includes providing psychological support, efforts to improve psychological well-being, whereas positive emotion management includes acceptance of the condition and improvement of the patient's condition. Conclusion: Family members caring for a head of household with hypertension face various challenges in adapting, so good family support can improve patient adherence to treatment, reduce the risk of complications, and improve patient quality of life. Therefore, strengthening psychosocial adaptation within the family is essential as part of a holistic approach in managing hypertension in the head of the family.
