Abstract

The documentary "Sexy Killers" is a Watchdoc film with over 37 million views. It depicts a complex social problem caused by coal mining activities located too close to residential areas, resulting in serious impacts on the surrounding community. Documentaries play a crucial role in shaping awareness and behavior, linked to social awareness. Social awareness in each individual is influenced by education and knowledge. Social awareness among college students is particularly relevant because they play a crucial role as agents of change in society. However, social awareness among Generation Z is declining. The author's purpose in conducting this study was to determine the effect of the documentary "Sexy Killers" on social awareness among college students.
The theory used in this study is Media Exposure Theory, which measures media exposure using indicators of frequency, duration, and attention. The measurement of social awareness utilizes Daniel Goleman's measurement concept, which includes social knowledge, basic empathy, alignment, empathic accuracy, and action. The research method employed in this study is quantitative with a total sampling technique. The analysis used product-moment correlation analysis, simple linear regression analysis, and coefficient of determination analysis. To test the hypothesis, the researcher used product-moment correlation by comparing the calculated r and the tabulated r.
The results of this study indicate that the film "Sexy Killers" has an influence on social awareness, with a value of 0.465 > 0.404 at a 5% significance level. The correlation between variables is moderate. The magnitude of the film's influence on social awareness is 22%.
