Abstract

This study explores the parenting experiences of parents with special needs children (ABK), focusing on children with autism diagnoses who attend River Kids Autism Special School in Malang City. This study is based on the fact that ABK parents often face diverse challenges, including emotional stress, social stigma, and financial burden. These challenges often affect the quality of care they can provide, highlighting the need for adequate support systems. The main objectives of this study were to understand how parents experience the parenting process and to identify the role of social support in strengthening their capacity to cope. This study sought to uncover how peer networks contribute to parental resilience and well-being. The design used in this study was qualitative using observation and in-depth interviews as the main data collection methods. Participants in this study were parents of students enrolled at River Kids, who offered first-hand insights into their parenting journey. The results showed that social support, especially from fellow parents in the school environment, played an important role in reducing psychological distress and increasing self-confidence in parenting. Sharing experiences, emotional validation, and practical advice proved to be very impactful. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of creating structured and sustainable support networks involving schools, communities, and professionals. Such collaboration is essential to ensure that families with children with special needs receive the encouragement and resources needed to carry out their caregiving responsibilities effectively.
