Abstract
Background: New patient admission is the first stage in the healthcare process and significantly influences a patient's first impression of a hospital or healthcare facility. The new patient admission process encompasses both administrative and psychological aspects. Most patients, especially first-time inpatients or those with serious medical diagnoses, experience high levels of anxiety during hospitalization. The purpose of this study was to compare the implementation of new patient admission procedures by ward nurses with those by intern students on patient anxiety levels.
Method: This study used a quantitative descriptive design with a total sample of 30 patients (10 patients undergoing PPB procedures with ward nurses and 20 patients undergoing PPB procedures with student interns). Data were collected through observation of the implementation of new patient admission procedures based on SOP and measurement of anxiety levels using the Zung Self Rating Anxiety Scale. Analysis was conducted descriptively by comparing the actions of ward nurses with those of student interns.
Results: The study results showed a significant difference in patient anxiety levels between patients who underwent PPB procedures by nurses and those who underwent PPB procedures by student interns. In patients who underwent PPB by nurses, 50% experienced mild anxiety, 30% moderate anxiety, and 20% severe anxiety. Meanwhile, in patients who underwent PPB by student interns, 90% experienced mild anxiety, 10% moderate anxiety, and no severe anxiety was found.
Conclusion: Implementing new patient admission procedures in accordance with standard operating procedures has been proven effective in reducing patient anxiety levels. An informative and communicative approach to the orientation process is crucial for improving patient comfort and adaptation during the initial hospital stay.
