Abstract

Communication ethnography is an approach that studies how language and symbols are used in specific social and cultural contexts, focusing on interaction and communication within a community. This research aims to uncover cultural communication practices in the Siraman Sedudo ritual tradition of warding off disasters in Ngliman Village, Sawahan District, Nganjuk Regency, East Java. This ritual tradition has been passed down through generations and is performed annually in the month of Suro in the Javanese calendar as a form of prayer for safety and warding off disasters. Using a qualitative approach and communication ethnography methods, this research focuses on analyzing three main components: the communicative situation, the communicative event, and the communicative act developed by Dell Hymes.

The results show that the Siraman Sedudo tradition is not only a form of local cultural preservation but also contains spiritual messages conveyed through symbols, language, and actions. Water from the Sedudo Waterfall, the primary medium in the ritual, is interpreted as a sacred element representing purification and a request for safety. Communication in this tradition takes place verbally and nonverbally, with symbolic power connecting humans with nature and spiritual forces.
