Abstract

Putri, Dwindy Nadira Rechita and Indrawanto, Iwan Sys. 2025. The Relationship
Between Anxiety Levels and Academic Achievement Among Medical Students at
the Faculty of Medicine, University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Undergraduate
Thesis, Faculty of Medicine, University of Muhammadiyah Malang.*
Background : Anxiety is described as an unpleasant feeling of fear. This feeling of
fear can lead to other negative emotions such as confusion, worry, disappointment,
and so on. Anxiety experienced by an individual can have a detrimental effect on
their life. Academic anxiety, in particular, may affect learning achievement and
eventually impact one's Grade Point Average (GPA). Objective : To determine the
relationship between levels of anxiety and academic achievement among medical
students at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Muhammadiyah Malang.
Method : This study employed a descriptive-analytic design using a cross-sectional
method conducted in July 2024, involving 80 medical students at the Faculty of
Medicine, University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The sample consisted of students
who met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed using the chi-square test. The
sample size was calculated using the formula for comparative categorical data with
unpaired observations and a one-time measurement. Results : The results of the
study showed a p-value of 0.549, indicating no significant relationship between
anxiety levels and academic performance (GPA) (p = 0.549; p > 0.05) at a 5%
significance level. This result suggests that the level of anxiety experienced by
students is not statistically correlated with their GPA. A total of four (4) students
experienced severe to very severe anxiety, while twenty-seven (27) students
experienced mild to moderate anxiety. Additionally, 65% of the students had a GPA
in the range of 2.75–3.49. Conclusion : There is no significant relationship between
the level of anxiety and the academic achievement (GPA) of medical students at the
Faculty of Medicine, University of Muhammadiyah Malang.
