Abstract

Aryanti , Maulidya Tryas Aryanti. NIM 202110040311178. Interpersonal Communication Strategies of Married Couples in Maintaining Long-Distance Marriages (Case Study in Mojoketo City). Thesis, Communication Studies Program, University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Supervisor: Zen Amiruddin, S.Sos, Medkom.
This research was motivated by the researcher's interest in the phenomenon of long-distance marriages occurring in the surrounding area, and the researcher focused on conducting the research in Mojokerto City. In this phenomenon, the researcher observed the strategies used by the individuals involved in maintaining long-distance marriages. The researcher interviewed three couples, totaling six informants.
This study uses the Fundamental Interpersonal Relationship Orientation (FIRO) theory, a theory of interpersonal relationships that focuses on communication behavior that occurs in small groups. This theory aims to identify interpersonal communication strategies for managing conflict in marital relationships and maintaining long-distance marriages, which is the focus of the study. This study employed a qualitative approach, using a case study method to obtain more detailed and in-depth information.
The results indicate that some couples are able to maintain long-distance marriages.
In addition to the five aspects of interpersonal communication: openness, empathy, support, positive feelings, and equality, there are also supporting factors for success, namely commitment, trust, regular communication, communication skills, and the use of technology. This supports interpersonal communication between couples in the form of strategies for formulating and delivering messages, as well as factors supporting the success of long-distance marriages. Therefore, the strategies used by the three informant couples were: Couple A implemented equality, openness, and empathy, Couple B used positivity, openness, and support, and Couple C applied openness, support, and equality in their respective marital relationships during their long-distance marriages. Therefore, it can be concluded that all three couples were able to maintain a harmonious marriage.
