Abstract
Background: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a leading cause of death in Indonesia, with hypertension identified as one of its major risk factors. Hypertension is believed to accelerate atherosclerosis, contributing to increased severity of coronary artery stenosis. However, the direct relationship between hypertension and stenosis severity remains controversial.
Objective: To examine the relationship between hypertension and the degree of stenosis in patients with CAD undergoing coronary angiography at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang Hospital (RSU UMM) in 2022.
Methods: This was an analytical observational study using a cross-sectional design. Data were obtained from the medical records of 179 CAD patients who underwent cardiac catheterization. The degree of stenosis was assessed using the Sullivan Stenosis Score. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods, with the Chi-Square test employed for statistical significance.
Results: Most patients were over 50 years old (75.4%) and had a history of hypertension (63.1%). The most frequent stenosis score was score 4 (53.1%). Bivariate analysis showed no statistically significant relationship between hypertension and stenosis severity (p = 0.260), although hypertensive patients tended to have higher stenosis scores.
Conclusion: No statistically significant association was found between hypertension and the severity of stenosis in CAD patients at RSU UMM. However, the distribution pattern suggests a tendency for more severe stenosis among hypertensive patients. Further studies are needed to explore the influence of other risk factors such as lipid profile, lifestyle, and genetic predisposition.
