Abstract
Background: Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder characterized by changes in perception, thinking, and behavior, one of which is auditory hallucinations. According to the WHO (2020), approximately 450 million people worldwide suffer from mental disorders, with schizophrenia being one of the most common. Untreated auditory hallucinations can lead to anxiety, fear, and even aggressive behavior. Classical music therapy, particularly Mozart's work, is one non-pharmacological intervention proven effective in helping reduce the frequency of hallucinations.
Methods: This study used a case study approach with a qualitative descriptive method that aims to analyze classical music therapy interventions for patients with auditory hallucinations. The study was conducted at the Social Rehabilitation Unit (UPT) Bina Laras Pasuruan from April 24 to April 29, 2025. The subject was one patient diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia who experienced auditory hallucinations, selected through purposive sampling.
Results: Research shows that five days of regular classical music therapy has a positive effect on reducing the frequency of auditory hallucinations in patients with paranoid schizophrenia at the Bina Laras Social Rehabilitation Unit (UPT) in Pasuruan. Patients showed behavioral improvements, such as decreased self-talk, appearing calmer, and beginning to manage their hallucinations using taught techniques, such as rebuking voices and talking to those around them.
Discussion: Classical music therapy has been shown to reduce symptoms of auditory hallucinations. Patients undergoing this intervention tend to be more relaxed and able to manage their symptoms. This finding aligns with several previous studies, such as those by Mutaqin (2023) cited in Arif & Surakarta (2024) and Maria (2025), which showed that classical music, particularly Mozart's works, can increase feelings of calm and focus, thereby helping to minimize the frequency of hallucinations.
