Abstract
Farrel Rachyansani Sayyidina, 202110040311204. INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION MODELS OF ROMANTIC COUPLES (A Phenomenological Study on Adolescents Experiencing Fatherlessness).
Undergraduate Thesis, Communication Science Study Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang. 2025.
The phenomenon of fatherlessness defined as the absence of a father figure either physically or emotionally has become a global issue affecting adolescents’ development, particularly in romantic relationships. Adolescents experiencing fatherlessness often seek a substitute for a father figure when entering into a romantic relationship. Therefore, the researcher is interested in exploring the interpersonal communication models of romantic couples in adolescents who experience fatherlessness. This study employs a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method and descriptive type, involving five fatherless adolescent informants in Malang City. The research focuses on illustrating the communication dynamics using Goffman's Dramaturgy and Harville & Helen's Imago Relationship Theory across three models of interpersonal communication in romantic relationships: the one-way model, the two-way model, and the three-way model. The findings show that the interpersonal communication models used are predominantly the three-way and two-way models. Family background and emotional conditions influence how individuals present themselves in front of their partners. In the three-way model, it was observed that partners of fatherless adolescents who do not share the same condition tend to prioritize empathy and positivity key aspects of interpersonal communication. In contrast, the two-way model commonly occurs when both partners share similar backgrounds, often leading to differing viewpoints and conflicts. In conclusion, fatherless adolescents whose partners do not share the same experience tend to apply the three-way communication model, emphasizing empathy, support, and positivity. Meanwhile, adolescent couples who are both fatherless tend to apply the two-way communication model, which often results in conflict within the relationship.
