Abstract

The short fiction film "404" is a drama-fiction piece that addresses a humanitarian issue rooted in modern slavery. It uniquely integrates a Javanese cultural perspective, drawing on the concept of Jaman Edan from the Serat Kalathidha and the mythological figure Batara Kala from wayang. This creative work aims to understand and explain the director's role in the creative process during the production of "404." Through the film's production, this research analyzes every stage, from the development of the storytelling and film concepts to visual and sound arrangements, and finally, picture editing. The results demonstrate the director's crucial role in conveying the film's vision and mission by leading the creative process. Ultimately, this research concludes that the director successfully applied the vision and mission and effectively led the creative process from pre-production to post-production, highlighting that the director's role is pivotal for the film's final outcome.
