Abstract
The coffee culture has evolved from being merely a consumption activity to a significant means of social communication, especially among students. This research aims to understand the communication patterns through the coffee culture as a means of communication, with a case study on Kedai Kopi Sinar Remaja Kayutangan Malang.
The research approach used by the researcher is descriptive qualitative with a case study method. Data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of active students who frequently engage in coffee activities at the café. The theory used in this research is Erving Goffman's Interaction Involvement Theory, which includes three main indicators: cognitive (understanding), affective (perception), and behavioral (responsiveness).
The research results show that coffee-drinking activities can create a relaxed and informal atmosphere that supports communication. Students actively engage in meaningful message exchanges, forming an open and participatory communication pattern. The most dominant communication pattern is the star pattern, which allows all participants to interact with each other without anyone dominating. The conclusion drawn is that the coffee culture has proven to be an effective means of communication in building and strengthening social relations within the student environment. Additionally, the communication patterns found are capable of creating improvements, strengthening, and even maintaining the relationships formed during coffee activities.
