Abstract
In Indonesia, the utilization and development of mass media have significantly influenced the dissemination and diversity of information. The development of online media has also undergone changes, including the transition of print media now being presented more diversely in online media, and some print media implementing convergence. This transformation has resulted in the emergence of many online media outlets in various regions, such as the city of Malang. Therefore, media owners must be able to face intense competition in the online media industry, including Malang Posco Media.
This research aims to understand the news reporting strategy of Malang Posco Media in managing its news portal to maintain its existence amidst the tight competition of online media.
This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study type and employs the POAC management theory by George R. Terry (1986) to examine the editorial workflow stages and to understand how the media adapts to the digital environment. The researcher combines media ecology theory and media convergence theory.
The results of this study conclude that Malang Posco Media has three main strategies for implementing news reporting strategies in the face of tight online media competition, including (1) Issue determination strategy, where the editorial staff designs issues relevant to the needs of local readers. (2) News writing strategy, where Malang Posco Media has an engaging news writing formula and journalists focus on three important aspects of news writing. (3) Content presentation strategy on the portal, where Malang Posco Media has 24 sections with 8 types of news within them, thereby prioritizing the development of varied content, fast portal access, and a comfortable news portal design.
