Abstract

The phenomenon of single parenting in Indonesia continues to increase and affects children’s development, particularly in terms of independence. Independence is a crucial aspect for adolescents in making decisions, taking responsibility, and managing themselves. This study aims to describe the parenting styles applied by single parents and their impact on adolescent independence in Sumbersono Village, Lengkong District, Nganjuk Regency. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with purposive sampling, involving six pairs of subjects (single parents and their adolescent daughters). Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation, and analyzed thematically. The results show that democratic parenting tends to foster emotional, behavioral, and value-based independence. Authoritarian parenting can also develop behavioral independence, such as obedience in worship, rule-following, and initiative. Meanwhile, permissive parenting, in some cases, supports emotional and value-based independence, such as self-regulation and future planning. This study concludes that adolescent independence is not solely determined by parenting style but also influenced by individual motivation, family conditions, and a supportive environment.
