Abstract

This study aims to analyze audience reception of Instagram posts by @rumah_shitmeme.id, which discuss comments made by regional politicians regarding the Indonesian National Football Team’s victory at the 2023 SEA Games. This phenomenon is interesting because politicians are perceived to exploit the public euphoria for personal and political gain. The satire in the content is packaged as memes that subtly and humorously mock, provoking various interpretations among the public—especially within the Stand Up Indo Malang community, known for their sensitivity to social and political issues.

This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with Stuart Hall’s reception theory to explore how audiences interpret the satirical messages embedded in the content. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with five members of the Stand Up Indo Malang community who actively incorporate political satire in their performances.

The findings show that most participants occupy a dominant-hegemonic position, fully accepting the satirical message as social criticism against politicians who exploit the Indonesian National Team’s victory for personal image-building. Some participants adopt a negotiated position, accepting the message but critiquing its delivery and social context. Meanwhile, a small portion adopts an oppositional stance, rejecting the satire as partially unethical and likely to create public opinion bias.

This study demonstrates that social media, particularly Instagram, has become an effective public space for conveying political criticism through digital humor and satire. Moreover, it emphasizes the important role of comedy communities in interpreting, critiquing, and responding to evolving socio-political issues. Satirical memes serve not only as entertainment but also as alternative political communication tools that can spark public discussion, enhance critical awareness, and reflect the current political climate in Indonesia.
