Abstract
This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the shadowing method in improving students' writing skills in the Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) program at Ho Chi Minh City Open University, Vietnam. The shadowing method, which is typically applied in listening and speaking instruction, is used in this study as a strategy to strengthen students' understanding of language structure prior to writing. This research employs a quantitative approach with a One-Group Pretest-Posttest design. The sample consisted of 21 students from the Indonesian 2 class, selected using total sampling technique. The instruments used included BIPA teaching materials and narrative essay tests administered before and after the treatment.
The results showed a significant increase in the average writing skill scores, from 55.62 in the pretest to 76.19 in the posttest. The paired sample t-test showed a significance value of 0.004 (p < 0.05), indicating a meaningful difference between the scores before and after the treatment. These findings demonstrate that the shadowing method is effective in improving foreign students’ writing skills in learning the Indonesian language, and it has the potential to serve as a suitable alternative strategy in BIPA instruction, especially in enhancing writing proficiency
