Abstract

Background: Stroke is a leading cause of disability, with approximately 60% of patients experiencing permanent impairments, including physical mobility limitations. In addition to physical consequences, stroke also leads to psychological disturbances that may worsen patients' quality of life. In Indonesia, around 63% of stroke survivors face mild stigma. However, research on family stigma toward stroke patients with physical mobility impairments remains limited. Objective: This study aims to describe family stigma toward stroke patients, analyze factors influencing stigma, and assess its impact on patient recovery. Methods: A qualitative approach was employed through a case study involving two participants selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentation, and analyzed using domain analysis techniques. Results: The findings indicate that although explicit stigma from families was not observed, families experienced emotional and practical burdens during caregiving. Despite these challenges, they continued to provide care due to moral obligations. Data analysis revealed four main themes: post-stroke patient conditions, caregiving burdens, family dynamics, and social stigma. Conclusion: These findings suggest that family stigma is not limited to overt discrimination; emotional burdens experienced by families can also influence the recovery process and the quality of life of stroke patients.
