Abstract
Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the leading non-communicable diseases that causes both global and national deaths, with a continuously increasing prevalence. Hemodialysis therapy, which serves as the main replacement for kidney function in CKD patients, requires long-term care that affects the physical, psychological, social, and economic aspects of the patient. The family plays a vital role in caring for CKD patients, and the family’s perspective on this care can influence the patient’s quality of life. Objective: To understand the experiences of families in caring for patients undergoing hemodialysis therapy at home and to examine the role of caregivers in caring for family members with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis therapy. Method: This research used a qualitative design with a case study method. The study was conducted in Tumpang Village, Malang Regency, from August to November 2024, with three participants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews using a phenomenological approach to understand the family’s lifestyle and knowledge in caring for CKD patients. Data validity was tested using External Validity Testing, and data analysis was conducted inductively to understand the meaning behind the findings. Results: The findings of this study indicate that caring for a CKD patient creates significant emotional burdens for the family, including feelings of stress, fatigue, and emotional instability. The family also demonstrated a good understanding of the patient’s nutritional needs, especially in avoiding high-potassium foods, and made efforts to provide healthy meals. In addition, self-acceptance is also important in maintaining the patient's health.. Conclusion: This study concludes that emotional support, understanding of nutrition, and social support provided by the family play a crucial role in the care of patients with chronic kidney disease.
