Abstract

ABSTRACT Experiences of Adolescent Girls in Dealing with Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) Nazwa Nabilla', Nurul Aini² 'Student of DIII Nursing Study Program, University of Muhammadiyah Malang, Lecturer of Nursing, University of Muhammadiyah Malang Background: Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a collection of physical and emotional symptoms experienced by adolescent girls 7-10 days before menstruation, which is influenced by age, stress and unhealthy diet factors. Which can affect the activities and well-being of adolescent girls. Objective: This study aims to understand the experiences of adolescent girls in dealing with PMS, its impacts, and the coping strategies used. Method: This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed thematically with five adolescent girls in Malang City. Results: The results of the analysis obtained three themes, namely: 1). Emotional impacts such as anxiety, fear, mod swings, and irritability, 2). Family roles and support, 3). Physical effects, such as abdominal pain, back pain, breast tenderness, acne, nausea-vomiting. Participants used coping strategies and social support to adapt to PMS. Conclusion: Family-based education is important to improve understanding and management of PMS. Coping strategies and family support play an important role in helping adolescents deal with PMS.
