Abstract
This research seeks to explore the patterns of communication between parents and children in addressing violence among ninth-grade students at SMPN 16 Balikpapan City. The study utilizes Fitzpatrick’s Family Communication Pattern Theory—which categorizes family interactions into consensual, pluralistic, protective, and laissez-faire types—as well as Littlejohn’s Interpersonal Communication Theory, which highlights the significance of two-way communication, empathy, and openness in parent-child relationships.
A qualitative case study approach was adopted, with data collected through interviews involving five students and five parents from the selected ninth-grade cohort. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, and Data Triangulation was applied to ensure validity.
Findings reveal that various family communication patterns exist within the SMPN 16 Balikpapan City community: consensual patterns marked by dialogue and shared decision-making; pluralistic patterns characterized by openness and the freedom for children to express their views; protective patterns where parents primarily direct without much discussion; and laissez-faire patterns with minimal interaction and communication. Each pattern shapes the dynamics of family relationships differently and influences how students respond to incidents of violence at school.
