Abstract

Fractional Numbers is a topic introduced from Grade III to Grade VI in elementary school. During the teaching and learning process, students often face learning difficulties due to inhibiting factors, as each student has different abilities. One of the main difficulties students encounter is solving problems involving the addition of fractions. Adding fractions requires the ability to find a common denominator and understand the process of solving fractions, which is a crucial step in fraction operations. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the learning difficulties faced by students in the topic of adding fractions in Grade V at SD Muhammadiyah 05 Batu.
The aim of this study is to describe the students' learning difficulties and identify the causes of those difficulties in learning the topic of adding fractions. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, written tests, and documentation in Grade V at SD Muhammadiyah 05 Batu.
The learning difficulties students experience in the topic of adding fractions include: difficulty representing fractions in visual form, difficulty identifying numerators and denominators, difficulty finding common denominators, and difficulty determining the correct numerator after changing the denominator. The causes of these learning difficulties include: students' inability to distinguish equivalent fractions, lack of mastery of the steps involved in adding fractions with different denominators, the absence of teaching aids or media in learning fraction addition, and insufficient practice in solving fraction addition problems.
