Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a serious condition that can lead to complications
such as stroke, heart attack, and kidney failure. The higher the blood pressure, the
greater the risk of organ damage, particularly to the heart and brain. Hypertension
is a leading cause of death in Asia. Around 22 million Indonesian people have
hypertension. Objective: To determine the knowledge and dietary patterns of
hypertensive patients. Methods: This study used a qualitative approach with a case
study design. Data was collected through observation, interviews, and
documentation from three participants: Participant 1 (hypertensive patient),
Participant 2 (the patient’s wife), and Participant 3 (the patient’s child). Data
analysis involved reduction, presentation, and verification. Results: The study
revealed four main themes: 1) Knowledge of hypertension diet, 2) Types of food
consumed, 3) Portion sizes of the diet, and 4) Frequency of the diet. Discussion:
The patient makes efforts to manage hypertension by consuming fruits and
vegetables regularly. However, improvements are needed in reducing salt and fat
intake and increasing water consumption.
